History of Rebel Lures
The Rebel Lures company founded, in 1961 by George Perrin, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, began as a custom injection molder. The company molded plastic parts for many firms in the Southwest. The parts ranged from small "corner blocks" used in ready-to-assemble kitchen cabinets to hand-finished cabinet doors, large decorative mirror frames and "crisper" drawers used in Whirlpool refrigerators. Most of the time the parts were never seen...they were on the inside as part of another product. However, there was one product that was very visible. In fact there are hundreds of thousands of them still in use today in homes across America. It is the wall mounted dispenser for the 3oz. Dixie cup distribution centers throughout the U.S. and Canada.
In 1963 Mr. Perrin, an avid fisherman, set out to create a "minnow" style fishing lure, a lure that, being made of plastic, would be consistent in its action and more durable than any other lure of its type available. The first lure introduced was the 3 1/2" (F10) Rebel Minnow. Its success came almost overnight. Demand quickly grew for other sizes and styles of the now legendary minnows. In the process of creating this lure, he had to give it a name. That same year, Fort Smith's new Southside High School was dedicated. Their football team was named, the "REBELS." The name stuck and so did Rebel Lures!
It wasn't long before anglers everywhere began asking for other style lures... models that would sink, others that would run deep, topwater poppers, and later, crankbaits. A host of Rebel lures, some early models, are now legends... lures like the "Broken Back" (jointed) minnow, the Super-R, Pop-R, Wee-R, and the Rebel Crawfish series.
Rebel was not only limited to lure making, in 1971 they had begun making "Bass" boats. In fact Rebel furnished the boats for the very first Bass Master Classic . Rebel also began to branch out to other products like tackle boxes and trolling motors, but always keeping lure making the main staple of production. In the ensuing years, the Rebel product line was expanded to include lures for all species of fresh and saltwater fishing. These lures remain today as productive favorites in the tackle boxes of pro and novice anglers around the world!
