Fishing Baits - Minnows
Big fish eat smaller fish. Sensibly enough, you can use small fish as Fishing Baits. These Fishing Baits are called Minnows. They do not grow for more than one foot. Examples of these Fishing Baits are sculpins, shiners, shad, and chubs. You can buy minnows at a bait shop and they are usually sold by the dozen. You can likewise collect minnows on your own.
Rigging Minnows
When fishing in calm water, hook the Minnow through the top of its back behind the dorsal fin. Be careful while doing this- you can break the spine and eventually paralyze it if you pierce the Minnow's back too low. Attach a bobber above the
Fish Hook. Add a split shot if the Minnow swims to the water surface.
On the other hand, hook the Minnow through its lower and upper lip when you are fishing in moving water. Add a split shot and let the Minnow swim across the bottom.
Gathering Minnows
Collecting Minnows can be of two ways: trapping using a minnow trap, and seining with the use of a seine net.
- Trapping
In trapping, you will use a minnow trap. This is a cylinder-like net- wire thing that has small holes on each end. You place pieces of bread or any bait inside the minnow trap. Once the Minnows are inside, they will not be able to come out because the holes funnel into the trap's body. Attach one or two rocks to the trap for weight. Fasten the minnow trap to a rope and throw it in the lake or pond. After an hour or so, pull the minnow trap back. If the trapping is successful, you will find Minnows inside the trap.
- Seining
In seining, you will need a large, square cloth net that has a tight mesh at the bottom. Each end of the cloth net is fastened to a pole or stick. Two persons will be needed in seining- one will be in-charge of holding the seine net, and the other one will walk downstream, back and forth from bank to bank. This motion will push the Minnows towards the back of the net that blows up in the water current. After this, haul the cloth net and collect your Minnows.
Keeping Minnows
Make sure that you keep your Minnows in a cool setting. This can be done by filling your bucket with cool water and placing the bucket out of the sun. Putting a sealed plastic bag filled with ice cubes in the bucket of water will also prevent the water from heating up.
There are different kinds of Fishing Baits out there. In general, it is really a matter of preference or need. Use the bait that suits the kind of Fishing that you do and you can be on your way to a nice catch.
