Fishing Safety and Guidelines - Insect Bite Protection

Fishing Safety & Guidelines - Insect Bite Protection Insect species outnumber human beings. This is a fact. So do not be surprised if you find various insects- flying, walking, and crawling- on your Fishing Spot. Bugs, mosquitoes, bees, horseflies, and deer flies are some species of insects that you may encounter while fishing. Seeing them as part of God's wonderful creation will probably amuse you, but when insects start to bite your skin and swarm around you, they can definitely get on your nerves and drive you off the water.

To avoid Bee and other Insect Stings, you need to have an insect repellent. It is as important as your sunscreen for Sun Protection. Be choosy as far as insect repellents are concerned. Purchase repellents that have DEET as active ingredient. DEET, or diethyl-meta-toluamide, is the chemical most effective in the repellents used as protection against insects.

There are repellents in liquid or spray form. However, repellents in waxy stick form are advisable because they stick to your skin better and easy to carry. Avoiding the eyes portion, apply the insect repellent on all exposed skin especially on your hands and ears.

For some people who are hypersensitive to Bee Stings, take extra precautions. A single Bee Sting can actually put their lives in jeopardy. Ask your doctor about your condition in relation to Bee Stings and other Insect Bites.

Some insects such as deer flies appear to be resistant to repellents, so make sure that your clothing will cover most parts of your skin. You may also use a headnet which can shield your head, face, and neck from these insects, if you are fishing on areas which are probable habitats of certain species like bugs.

In the unlucky event that you got stung by bees or other insects, here are some ways of treating them:

  • When you are stung by a bee, its sting is left on your skin. It is important to immediately remove the sting because it will keep on pumping venom for about 20 minutes. You can remove it by scraping it with a needle or a knife. Do not use your bare hands in removing the sting. It is likely that the sting will pump venom on your skin.

  • Use an insect string ointment to relieve the pain and irritation from insect stings.

  • For worse cases such as when someone has multiple Bee Stings, it can turn into anaphylactic shock. This can lead to swelling obstructing the air passages. Remove the stings and apply antihistamine medication right away. The important thing here is to clear the airways. Apply CPR when necessary.

Insects are part of nature's wonders, so do not annoy them. But protect yourself before insects start annoying you.
