Costa Rica has long been a haven for fishermen around the world not only for the abundance of fish it offers, but for its serene waters as well.
Some of the fish species caught in large numbers off the Pacific Coast are sailfish, blue marlin, striped marlin, roosterfish, tuna, and snapper. In the Caribbean coast, fishing for tarpon and snook is quite prominent.
Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast offers superb saltwater action, from the Golfo Dulce in the south, the Quepos-Manuel Antonio in the mid-Pacific, to the Papagayo Gulf and Flamingo in the north. There are also canals and rivers in the northern Atlantic coast that feature world-class snook and tarpon fishing. The country’s biggest attractions are billfish with abundant sailfish and marlin off the Pacific coast. Deep Sea Fishing may be the country’s popular type of Fishing. There are lots of great Fishing spots in Lake Arenal and the larger rivers in the Northern Zone.
The canals and rivers of the northern Atlantic coast feature world-class snook and tarpon fishing. Aside from billfish, fishermen also hook plenty of other feisty fighters such as wahoo and roosterfish.
Here are some of the major fish species caught in Costa Rica.
Marlin
Marlin comes in either blue or black and can weigh around 600 pounds, Because of the size, power, and high resistance of each fish, marlin is highly prized by all anglers. Marlin can be found at the southern part of Costa Rica in the Golfito area all the way up to the North Pacific Coast.
Sailfish
The sailfish in Costa Rica is present on every international angler’s wish list. Tournaments are usually held from June to July but there is no particular season regarding sailfish. This fish spends more time in the air than on water but it is not as powerful as the marlin.
