Fishing Disciplines - Crappie Fishing

Fishing Disciplines - Crappie Fishing Crappie Fishing is a popular game Fishing activity. Crappie is a native of North America and is thus popular in the United States and Canada. In this section, let’s take a look at the features of crappie as well as the basics of catching this fish species:

Crappie
This fish, as mentioned earlier, is a native of North America and is a member of the sunfish family. Although crappie may be called by different names in the different parts of the continent, most people recognize this fish to be composed of two species: the black and the white crappie.

The black crappie, as its name suggests, is of a darker color. It is distinguished from its white counterpart because of its dark gray or black spots on its side. Aside from that, the black crappie has 7-8 dorsal spines on the top of its back. This type of crappie is usually found in the northern part of the continent.

Meanwhile, the white crappie is lighter in color and has vertical grayish bands along its side. Unlike the black crappie, this sub-species has 5-6 dorsal spines. The white crappie abounds in the southern part of North America.

Baits
You can try out several combinations of baits that can work for you, but knowing what a crappie usually eats will make choosing baits much easier. Crappie usually eats most types of insects, worms, minnows, and small crayfish. Because of the variety of the food it eats, choosing bait for the crappie is much easier than most fish.

Now that you know what food it eats, try baits that resemble minnows, insects, and the like. You can also use jigs and spinners.

When to Catch a Crappie
Although you are sure to catch a crappie throughout the year, the best times to catch one are during spring and fall. Spring is the time when the temperatures are just about to rise and it is when the crappie’s pre-spawn period is. During this time, a crappie will move to shallow water to feed, thus, it is best to drop your lure somewhere along the shoreline.

Meanwhile, during fall, the crappie feeds aggressively to fatten up for the coming winter. Because of this, luring a crappie to bite your bait will be much easier during this period.

Know the behavior and feeding habits of your target fish to increase your chances of having a successful catch. People say that the crappie is one of the best tasting fish there is so try Crappie Fishing and enjoy your catch!
