Fishing Disciplines - Lake Fishing
Written by: ccarlos
Lake Fishing is one of the popular outdoor activities enjoyed by both beginners and experienced anglers. Fishing in lakes, bodies of water which are slightly bigger than ponds, is highly favored because lake levels remain fairly stable throughout the year. Lake Fishing also serves as a relaxing sport as one is surrounded by amazing sceneries and abundance of natural resources and other interesting sights that provide excellent views.
Why Lake Fishing?
Lake Fishing centers around shallow bay and shoreline areas where water temperatures, cover, and forage favor warm water fish species. Techniques used in pursuit of these species include Fly Fishing, still fishing, trolling, and spinning or bait casting. Bait Fishing is the simplest, and possibly the most effective technique.
One way to have a successful Lake Fishing experience is by having a thorough understanding of seasonal lake changes and the habits and distribution of fish in the lake area.
Lakes and similar bodies of water are usually divided into three zones or areas. The top layer, although it has the most dissolved oxygen due to its contact with air, is not frequented by fish because the temperature in this zone is too warm. Usually, fish species stay in deep, cooler waters. The bottom zone may be the coolest part of the water but fish cannot survive in this area due to insufficient oxygen supply. Finally, the most important area is the middle layer where the temperature and oxygen level are of right proportion, therefore most preferred by fish. With this, you can hopefully aim your lines on the middle layer and have a successful catch.
Here are tips to keep in mind when fishing in a lake:
- Make sure you are familiar with where you are going. It’s best to have a navigational map (usually available in area stores and Lake Visitor centers) to help you in your trip.
- Know the Fishing regulations of the area.
- Dress appropriately.
- Be lake-friendly. Keep hold of your trash, it can easily be blown into the water, especially from a moving boat. Put your disposable items in waste containers and help preserve the cleanliness of the lake.
Finally, don’t forget to have fun! You may not be guaranteed to catch a fish but you can surely go home with good memories and fun time fishing in the lake!
