Fishing Disciplines - Pole Fishing
Written by: marijoy
Fishing with the use of a pole provides a level of precision that a rod and reel cannot just create. Others will think that Pole Fishing is an ungainly way to fish, but once learned, it can become a form of relaxation and perhaps, a sport.
Poles have varieties of floats which have shapes and styles that suit different situations. Pole Fishing which uses a slim body pole float catches very small fish. It is ultra sensitive and does not take a lot of weight to set in the water. With body - down pole floats, fishing works well in most conditions but is suitable for calm water. On the other hand, the shoulder – up pole float works very well on both calm and windy days. If the wind picks up, then just remove a piece of shot and the tip can go higher in the water. If the wind is calm, then add the shot again so that the tip is lower in the water.
The body – up pole float fishing is the most common style of Pole Fishing. The main advantage of this is that the center of gravity is closer to the float tip. This provides greater stability for the float. This is suitable for most Fishing conditions and works very well in calm water. This float also works well under windy conditions.
Both hands are needed in Pole Fishing. One hand will grasp the pole in front while the other will hold the butt of the pole to maintain balance. When the fish takes the bait, the float tip will move. Fish is struck by simply tilting the pole tip up in the air. Push the pole butt down with the rear hand. Do not jerk the pole tip. Just set the hook into the mouth of the fish.
Different techniques can be done in landing fish on poles. One is to tire the fish by making it swim around and this should only ever been done up to the point of being able to land it. The other one is by luring a larger fish into the landing net. A long pole is needed in this technique. You can also confuse the fish and make it stay in one place.
Pole Fishing is not complicated. However, a pole in the hands of a good fisherman will show what is really in front of him in the water. Being knowledgeable in proper handling of the pole will prepare the angler for any situation.
