Fishing Disciplines - Pond Fishing
Written by: cj apelo
Among many other bodies of water, ponds are still a great place when it comes to Fishing. Like small lakes, farm ponds produce fish at the same or better rates than big lakes. Many anglers often prefer bigger water venues where they could make use of their boats, ships or their state-of-the-art Fishing Equipment. Still, there were some who prefer smaller and shallower waters - such as ponds - where they could practice the traditional way of Fishing with the use of baits.
In Pond Fishing, one thing that you should keep in mind is that you should walk softly, making as little noise as possible. Heavy footsteps or the thumps of running feet are like warning signals to every fish in the pond. Also, it is best to sit or crouch a bit from the bank. A little carelessness could make the fish stay away.
Fish species tend to hide on branches, rocks or any part in the water. They serve as good hiding places for the fish, thus anglers refer to these things as “covers”. However, as fish species found them conducive as their hiding spots, they serve as good Fishing spots for anglers as well. Many ponds have bass, catfish, and bluegill, as well as crappie and sunfish.
Here are some tips to bear in mind when it comes to Pond Fishing:
- Panfish
They often hang around in schools or as groups thus when you find one, chances are, you’ll be finding more. One good way of catching a panfish is through the use of a Number 6 or a Number 8 hook, with a worm attached on its end. Add a small bobber at about two feet, attached a split shot of about 8 inches. A bobber will help you identify whether a fish has touched your bait or not. Since panfish usually go in groups, if nothing bites in your line in a few minutes, coil your line and move to another spot.
- Catfish
Most of the time, catfish swim in deep water near the bottom, but sometimes, usually during spring and summer days, they stay near the surface. Also, they are usually active at night, making it fun to fish for them using a lantern light or firelight. Still, it doesn’t mean you can catch them through the day.
One good place to fish for this type of fish is at the deep end of the pond, keeping your bait near the bottom. Thread several live worms onto your hook for bait. Anything that has a stinking smell would be an ideal bait for catfish.
- Bass
When fishing for bass, you could work all around the cover, just as you would when fishing for panfish. It’s advisable to cast reel to the left or right when fishing in the deep side of shoreline weeds. This way, your bait will have more access on Fishing areas as you reel it back toward you.
You‘ll need a worm hook, a huge type of hook, larger than a panfish hook. It often has barbs right below the eye of the hook. This is to hold the nose of a plastic worm while the point hook is poked into the worm’s body.
Pond Fishing is one great way to spend your lazy hours. This could also serve as a good bonding moment with kids. Discover the joys of Pond Fishing. At the end of the day, whether you caught a fish or not, you'll realize that it's a worthwhile experience.
