Fishing Disciplines - Shark Fishing
Nowadays, more people are getting interested in Shark Fishing. About 38 million sharks are killed in commercial and recreational Fishing every year.
There are many reasons why people catch sharks. One reason is that people are after the shark meat and fins. The shark fillets can be cooked deep-fried or even grilled. When served with fish and chips, they are called flakes. Likewise, the shark's fin is a main ingredient in shark fin soup. Shark meat is also a favorite in Europe.
There are many types of sharks. Most of them are hunted for food, while some are caught for other purposes such as using their denticles the same way sandpapers are used. Some also believe that shark cartilage can be an effective tool against cancer and treatment for osteoarthritis although it has never been proven.
Professional fishermen who hunt for sharks know the type of shark they are looking for and where to find them. They can look for blue sharks, which are the most aggressive, mako sharks which are game fish for saltwater fishermen, and tiger sharks which are popular for big game fishing enthusiasts.
Techniques & Tips
In general, the best time to fish for sharks is from July to October. When fishing for sharks, the most important thing to note down is the location. Check its structure (rise or dip in the sea floor) and water temperature. Most charters that offer Shark Fishing trips have their own gear. But because you are fishing for very big species, you will definitely need specific types of gear and equipment.
If you plan to catch a shark on your own, find a boat with enough deck space to stow your gear and to handle your shark. Choose your bait. Tuna and sting rays can be used as baits. Use different baits on different rigs. Other things that you must have are Leaders, heavy duty Fishing Lines, and hooks. You also need Bobbers so you can place your bait at varying depths.
Since sharks reproduce at a very slow rate, mature late, and bear very few offsprings, catching them requires great caution and respect. Remember that sharks are released after being caught so be careful in handling them as you can kill them or they can attack you if not handled properly.
