Fishing Disciplines - Surf Fishing
Written by: ggeneroso
Surf Fishing is the sport of catching fish in the shoreline. It can be done in different types of shores/beaches - sandy or rocky beaches, rock jetties or even fishing piers. Surf Fishing is possible in any coast worldwide.
Surf Fishing is getting more popular these days. In Britain, they call it beach casting. This activity has attracted many anglers. Surf Fishing is relatively inexpensive. You do not need a boat, so you save money and time, particularly in boat maintenance and travel.
Like any other sport or activity, several techniques are required to reach your goal - to have a big catch.
Birds could help in locating the fish. Do not just enjoy watching them, keep in mind that they are competitors in fishing. Likewise, take note that in Surf Fishing, the distance in casting is essential. Casting distance is one of the keys to successful fishing. Experienced surf anglers can cast 250 yards or more.
Surf Fishing can be done any time of the day. However, many species prefer to eat early in the morning and at the end of the day. This is true for bluefish and Spanish mackerel especially during summer. It is also advisable to surf fish at night. The beach is quieter without a lot of water users and several species of fish may come close to shore to eat.
Surf Fishing Equipment
Rod and Reel – The surf rod and Fishing Reel must complement each other. In general, rods should extend from 10 to 12 feet long. However, it is recommended that surf anglers should have rods in different lengths. The length of rods and type of reels to use depend on the Fishing conditions and the species you want to catch.
Sinkers or Weights - These hold the line to the bottom. Though there are new designs of sinkers, the pyramid-shaped sinker has remained the standard type in Fishing.
Baits - Live fish, live eels, blood worms, and artificial lures such as spoons, soft plastic, and buck tail can be used. The type of bait or lure to use depends on the Fishing conditions and the species you want to catch.
Clean rags, a sharpening stone, pliers, and small cutters are also essential to have a hassle-free Fishing trip. Clean rags are useful for wiping hands and cleaning reels after fishing. Pliers and cutters are for trimming lines and cutting bait, while the sharpening stone is used to sharpen the needle hook point for a better hookup.
Surf Fishing is fun but always take precautionary measures to avoid getting hurt. Try Surf Fishing for a different kind of Fishing experience.
