Fish and Game Closes Six Trout Fishing Streams

The Fish and Game New Zealand will be closing six trout fishing streams this coming fishing season to keep out an invasive rock snot algae called didymo.
The six trout fishing streams are Deep Stream and Deep Creek in the upper Rangitata, and the tributaries of Glenariffe Stream, Manuka Point Steam, Double Hill Flats Stream, and Hydra Waters Stream in upper Rakaia.
The streams are said to be ideal for didymo growth. Thick growths of didymo could damage the only two spawning streams in the Rangitata River – the Deep Stream and Deep Creek. Consequently, didymo establishment in those streams might wipe out salmon.
Central South Island Fish and Game officer Mark Webb says that Fish and Game New Zealand is hoping that the streams would only be closed for one season, and that methods for controlling or lessening the impact of didymo would be developed next year.
