The Gwich'in Renewable Resource Board is asking people to stop fishing in the Peel, Husky, and Rut rivers this season because of the 60 percent decline in the char population over the last five years.
Five years ago, the char population was estimated to be about 12,000 in all three rivers. Just last year, it dropped to 3,500. Through the years, the char population has declined because of over harvesting, says Robert Charlie, chairman of the board.
Charlie relates that the rivers would be closed to harvesters next year if the char population would not increase this season.
