Abalone fishing in the San Miguel Island in California might be brought back by the California Fish and Game Commission after a nine-year ban.
According to www.montereyherald.com, the California Abalone Association requested the California Department of Fish and Game to revive abalone fishing in the San Miguel Island. Consequently, a five-day survey has been launched yesterday by researchers to find out if the red-abalone population can endure commercial fishing.
"There's a feeling there is a good population of red abalone," says a supervising biologist and coordinator of the survey. Last year, the Fish and Game Commission has adopted an abalone recovery and management plan in San Miguel Island. Abalone fishing has been banned in California in 1997. Moreover, white abalone was listed as an endangered species in 2001.
The survey findings and the California Fish and Game Commission's decision will ultimately rule whether or not the state of California may favor commercial or recreational fishing of abalone.
