Contestants at the World Angling Championships held last week in Britain were drug tested because of officials' concerns that they will use stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine to sharpen their reflexes.
All anglers submitted urine samples for the drug testing which they all passed. However, the drug testing did not go well. The first batch of tests was faulty, and they had to repeat the whole process.
Many anglers were caught off-guard but they welcomed the regulation or else they will lose their prizes. "I think it's a good thing," says Sean Ashby, England team member and third placer in the individual competition. "It gives the sport credibility because we are subject to the same anti-doping tests as other sports...," he adds.
The introduction of drug-tests in fishing competitions is part of a plan to move up the angling standards to Olympic level, and to make it an official sport. A spokesman from the National Federation of Anglers said that top anglers are open to drug testing. "It gives the sport a higher status."
