Three fishermen were recently sentenced to probation and were ordered to pay around $18,000 after they have pleaded guilty in illegally catching shovelnose sturgeon, paddlefish meat and eggs.
Byron Mann, John Mann and Charles Wallace were sentenced to three years of probation last September 27. The Manns were ordered to pay out $17, 074 in restitution and Wallace $1,347.
According to a release from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, two Missouri Department of Conservation officers found an unattended and unlabeled net near Caruthersville. 50 shovelnose sturgeon and three pallid sturgeon, all federally endangered species were seen in the net. Mann admitted it was his net.
According to Mann, he had around 25 nets over 17 miles on the Mississippi River and said that the only way he could make money was to have unattended nets.
The Manns also collected fish caught by Wallace and sold them to a wholesaler in Tennessee. All three men admitted to catching and selling fish in violation of several state regulations.
