A fishing boat out looking for bait was struck by lightning, injuring two of the crew and causing extensive damage to the boat, according to www.haveeru.com.
The boat ‘Raastha’ from Thaa atoll Vilufushi was struck by lightning last Saturday. The two injured were Massood Mohamed, 43, and Ibrahim Ameez, 16.
Massood was injured when the lightning strike caused the electrical wires on the boat to explode. The ends of the wires had then struck Massood all over his body. One of his eyes was also damaged and parts of his body were burned when the wires hit him.
The boy who had been injured in the incident had received his injuries when he had fallen into the boat in shock and fear.
Both of them have now been released after receiving treatment at the Burunee Health Post.
According to Hassan Fulhu, the Captain of ‘Raastha’, Massood had received the injury to his eye when the meter board on the boat had hit him on the face after exploding off of its fixings due to the lightning strike.
“When the lightning struck, all the electrical items onboard exploded,” said the Hassan. There is a two feet long crack in the deck due to the strike. We never even saw the lightning strike though, but judging from the damage done to the boat it must have struck somewhere close. There was no evidence of fire onboard.”
