Four men from a sunken fishing vessel were rescued from a liferaft last January 29 after their vessel sank 30 miles East of Peterhead.
At 2.30pm, Aberdeen Coastguard received an MF radio transmission from the Buckie registered fishing vessel Evening Star reporting that they were taking in water and needed assistance. Aberdeen Coastguard scrambled a rescue helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth and the Peterhead RNLI lifeboat. Four nearby oil support vessels responded to the MAYDAY RELAY broadcast made by Aberdeen Coastguard and offered assistance: Sea Surveyor, Grampian Surveyor, Portosalvo and Viking Endeavour.
The rescue helicopter was already involved in a mountain rescue and was transferring casualties to the hospital. Aberdeen Coastguard considered transferring pumps to the fishing vessel by helicopter but soon after this, the crew of the Evening Star reported to the Coastguard that the situation had deteriorated and they were abandoning the ship to the liferaft. The vessel sank shortly after this.
The crew of the rescue helicopter located the liferaft and winched the fishermen onto the aircraft and they were taken to the Aberdeen airport. Fortunately, nobody was injured.
The weather conditions that day were winds with a force of 5 with good visibility.
