Six people were arrested last Monday night after being caught with nearly 1,200 abalone which they took from Point Cook Marine Sanctuary.
Abalone are a species of shellfish or mollusks. They are characterized by a richly colored inside shell made of nacre. The meat of this mollusk is considered a delicacy in certain parts of the world.
Fisheries Officers on patrol arrested the group after they saw them diving in chest deep water on an extremely low tide.
The retail price of abalone is around $130 per kilogram.
The suspects, five men and a woman, were taken to the Altona North Police Station. The maximum penalty for abalone trafficking is 10 years in jail.
