All across America, people are planning time on the water to celebrate National Fishing & Boating Week on June 2-10. The 7th annual celebration, which is coordinated by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF), promises to be the biggest ever with events planned from coast to coast, including fishing derbies, regattas, educational events, boating demonstrations, festivals and scores of other aquatic activities. This year, as part of a national effort to re-connect children with nature, RBFF is urging all Americans to get involved.
"The idea behind National Fishing & Boating Week is really quite simple," said RBFF President Frank Peterson. "We're trying to get families outside to have some fun together while inspiring kids' interest in outdoor activities."
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, kids spend an average of 44 hours a week on the computer, watching television and playing video games. Children and nature is an important national issue and Congress held its first hearings on the subject last May 24 to begin addressing solutions.
According to RBFF, connecting children with nature isn't just about getting kids outdoors today, it's about keeping them connected with nature throughout their lifetime. Recent research shows people who participate in boating and fishing as children are more likely to boat and fish as adults. Nearly 60 percent of first-time anglers were 13 years of age and younger and more than seven out of 10 current boating participants boated as children.
"If we want to foster lifetime connections with nature, we have to start with children," said Peterson. "I encourage everyone who's ever been fishing or boating to use National Fishing & Boating Week to introduce a child to nature."
During National Fishing & Boating Week, many states sponsor free fishing days, when no license is required. This is a great time for new anglers to try out the sport.
To make the most of the Week, visit the newly revamped TakeMeFishing.org, where visitors can search for more than 11,000 places to fish and boat nationwide. The noncommercial site also offers helpful tips and insights and lists the states' official free fishing days and all scheduled fishing and boating events.
