On August 4 next month the sixth annual Talking Trees Children's Trout Derby will be open at the Oconaluftee Islands Park in Cherokee. The all day event will feature fly-tying exhibitions, fish-cleaning stations, food, music and door prizes.
Trout Derby which is open for children who are 11 year old and under, entertains more than 1,000 children every year. The event will also be attended by professional bass fishermen, Orlando Wilson and Marty Fourkiller. The water in the Oconaluftee River originates from springs bubbling up and filtering through the ferns and moss in the neighboring Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Trophies will be awarded to the winners during the event. Registration and participation is free.
