Going where no conventional bass boat could travel, Darin Doll of York, Pa., made a long trek through treacherous shallows with a borrowed jet boat to win the BASS Federation Nation Mid-Atlantic Divisional Friday.
All three days of the tournament, Doll ran about an hour and a half up the Youghiogheny River to catch three consecutive limits of smallmouth bass. Friday the 37-year-old clinched the tournament championship by weighing in a 5-pound, 5-ounce limit to finish with a three-day total of 20 pounds, 7 ounces.
The York County BASS member alternated between a white 3/8-ounce Terminator double-bladed buzz bait and a 2-inch green pumpkin Mizmo tube on a 1/8-ounce jighead to catch all of his fish. The fish were holding near rocks and grass along the banks of the gravel shoals in 1 to 4 feet of water.
By winning the sixth and final Divisional of the season and leading his Pennsylvania team, Doll and five other anglers who finished atop their state teams advance to the BASS Federation Nation Championship. The championship event is scheduled for Nov. 8-10 on Florida's Lake Tohopekaliga.
