The federal government turned down Monday the request of Massachusetts, Maine and Rhode Island to declare New England groundfish fishery a disaster.
According to National Marine Fisheries Service officials, the New England's groundfish stocks were improving, and the overall fishing revenues went up in spite of groundfish revenues were falling.
Groundfish industry, which includes species like cod, haddock and flounder, lost $22 million in 2005 because regulations reduced fishing of every fisherman to less than 24 days a year.
Massachusetts Fisheries Recovery Commission’s report also showed that employment in the two of the country's largest ports declined: 22 percent in Gloucester and almost 61 percent in New Bedford.
