WEDNESDAY, 24 OCTOBER 2007
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department completed contractual negotiations for the Texas Clipper as part of the department’s Ships-to-Reefs program and become an artificial reef once it
is placed 17 nautical miles off the southern coast of Texas. It will take four to six months to prepare the ship for reefing.
In securing the Texas Clipper, Texas’s Artificial Reef Program worked for more than 10 years with the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD).
Cleaning of dangerous chemicals and materials will be done by ESCO Marine of Brownsville, which is a subcontractor for Resolve Marine Services. The cleanup plan was earlier approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the approval for sinking will be finished after EPA’s final inspection.
