Fishermen Forced to Cooperate on Auction Probe

FRIDAY, 23 NOVEMBER 2007
Federal fishery regulators threatened fishermen with fines if they would not provide information for the investigation of the Gloucester Seafood Display Auction.
About 60 skippers and several others who are associated with the fishing industry were called to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to be questioned about catch limit, permit discrepancies, among other things.
The investigation raised tension on the fishing industry even if most of the fishermen were not willing to speak on the record about the investigation.
NOAA had seized about 150 boxes of documents and computer records when it raided the auction last December 7. The auction has not yet been charged of any violation and the federal court affidavit containing NOAA’s reasons of search remained sealed. However, NOAA began questioning fishermen about the 2004 fishing year.
