L pod, one of three orca families that frequent Washington waters, was spotted off Monterey Bay, California. This indicates that Washington’s winter stocks of chinook could not adequately support them just as before.
Leading orca researcher calls this as an ominous sign that the orca group is apparently going farther than it once did. It shows a significant drop in the number of chinook, which is the orca's main food.
One of the suggested solutions is a moratorium on salmon fishing for a number of years, according to Ken Balcomb, founder of the Center for Whale Research.
