Concord - A student of De la Salle High School was ecstatic when he won $100,000 in the Fantasy Fishing tournament.
John Yandell, 18-year old senior, was a former rugby player who got broken ribs and burst kidney in a rugby competition two years ago. He saw the advertisement of the Forest L Wood (FLW) Outdoors Fantasy Fishing on television and immediately got interested in it. He did some research and chose who, he thought, would be the top 10 finishers out of 200 anglers in last week's National Guard Open bass tournament near Charlotte, N.C. Yandell garnered the major points when four of his anglers placed in the top 10, and two of them ended up in the exact spots he had predicted them to be, third and seventh. Yandell earned the most points for the week, beating out hundreds of thousands of competitors worldwide.
If not for the accident, Yandell may not have discovered his love for fishing. Six months after he was discharged from the hospital, he could not still be involved in many sports. A friend invited him to go fishing, caught a three-pound bass, and immediately fell in love with fishing.
Despite the accident and his new passion for fishing, Yandell has not given up rugby. Doctors gave him a clearance and asked him to wear a special padding to protect his right kidney. Though he knows that he may not be getting a lot of playing time, Yandell is determined to play and win the championship.
